Yoga is a combination of mindful movement, breathing, and meditation - helping children, and teenagers with or without SEN feel calm and develop motor skills, balance, strength, and coordination. Therapeutic yoga works on individual goals for children, addressing their specific physical as well as cognitive and social/emotional needs.
When adapted to be age-appropriate, children can find yoga engaging, interesting and fun. This alone would be reason enough to add it into their routine, especially when you consider the physical benefits of helping to develop their balance and flexibility.
The benefits of yoga for children with or without SEND have been well researched demonstrating that yoga ‘increased balance and coordination, increased self-esteem and social communication skills’ (Kenny, 2002), improves ‘balance, flexibility and coordination’ (White, 2017) and for young children with special needs, yoga improves concentration, focus, and creativity' (Mochan 2017).
